How Does Communication Change with the Social Web?

This last weekend, Zach and I attended the first annual InfoCamp (him for both days and me for Sunday). The conference was a great experience and it was great to meet and talk with the other professionals in attendance from the information field.

We decided to take advantage of the opportunity and led a session where we posed the following question: “How does communication change with the social web?” We felt this topic was highly relevant to anyone that is developing a social application, because it helps you focus on how people will communicate in your application and find ways to promote greater and more meaningful communication.

Our discussion was guided by the three following questions:

  1. How do social applications influence new things that people talk about?
  2. How do social applications influence things that people no longer talk about?
  3. How does the size and scope of a group impact who communicates and what is communicated?

As witnessed by the amount of involvement and engaging discussion in the session, these questions are critical to ask and explore the answers to within the context of your application.

Education

Education lasts a lifetime. In many ways it’s how we define ourselves, by what we learn about and teach others. It helps to shape our world view, the people we associate with, and what types of organizations we get involved in.

Yet as we grow up, education isn’t usually thought of as anything more than a chore, something that we have to do because a person in power said we do. At the same time, we spend our time learning about things that interest us informally and sometimes have difficulty finding a formal outlet to learn them in. And if you’d like to teach others about your specialty, it’s tough to gauge who would want to take classes from you and where they’re located.

Constantly learning helps you to meet new and interesting people, explore new experiences that help to test your limits, gain a competitive edge in the marketplace, and keep your mind young. Teaching allows you to further ingrain your knowledge, collaborate with others, and help to develop your field.

In an ideal world, education is a fun, core part of ones life.

Hello there. Thanks for checking us out!

Being curious as well, we’ve noticed it can be a challenge to find classes you want to take. Too much of a challenge for our liking. So we’re working on making the process much easier. You should be able to find a class that fits you and your schedule, easily.

And for teachers, if it’s easier for students to find your classes, then you’ll have more potential students to teach. And if the technology is easier to use, then you’ll have more time to teach those students.

That being said, we’re going to use this blog to keep you updated on our progress and also post related, fun, or random tidbits on here. We’re really excited about working on this site and can’t wait until everyone gets to enjoy it! :-)
